  • PhD Title: Analysis of gemstone rock breakage with soundless chemical demolition agents – a case study of small-scale mines in Zambia
  • Year of Completion: 2027

PhD Overview

My research proposes the use of a conventionally available soundless chemical demolition agent (SCDA) to fragment emerald-bearing rock. The research focusses on artisanal and small-scale miners. Currently, the use of high-energy explosives on gemstones, adapted from metaliferous mines, results in the loss of more than 60% of minerals. Therefore, research will investigate the potential of using environmentally safe, toxin-free, dust-free, and vibration-free SCDA to break gemstones while preserving the value of the minerals.
