Our History

Supporting scientific education since 1954

The Schlumberger Foundation was founded by Schlumberger Limited (SLB) in 1954 as a philanthropic organization to advance knowledge and promote excellence through Science, Technology Engineering & Maths (STEM) education.  Enriching communities through education has been deeply engrained in SLB culture for decades. The establishment of the Schlumberger Foundation acknowledged the essential role that scientific education played in the company’s past and future growth.

SLB – driving innovation for a balanced planet

Schlumberger Foundation’s founder SLB is a global technology company driving energy innovation for a balanced planet.  The SLB purpose is to create amazing technology that unlocks access to energy for the benefit of all.  As a company of innovators, that has been the mission for 100 years. Today the world is facing its greatest balancing act—how to simultaneously reduce emissions while meeting the world’s growing energy demands. SLB is working on that answer. Every day is a step closer. The collective future depends on decarbonizing the fossil fuel industry while innovating across the entire energy landscape. This is what drives SLB, ensuring progress for people and the planet—on the journey to net zero and beyond.  With a global footprint in more than 100 countries and employees representing almost twice as many nationalities, SLB works each day on decarbonizing industry, innovating in oil and gas, delivering digital at scale, and developing and scaling new energy systems that accelerate the energy transition.

20 years developing women leaders in STEM

In 2004 the Faculty for the Future program was established by Schlumberger Foundation to help focus funds and maximize the impact of the Foundation. The program acknowledged the practical importance of science and technology in solving global challenges and the potential of women to affect significant change.

The Faculty for the Future program uniquely invested in talented female scientists from emerging economies enabling them to pursue advanced graduate study at leading universities.

A $50m endowment made in 2011 has funded the program ever since and supported the creation of 915 women STEM leaders in the years that followed.

Our planet needs balance to thrive for the climate, for people and for nature. The world is rapidly changing – the scales are imbalanced and many are feeling the effects.  Balance comes from myriad  decisions taken daily across the globe; in policy making, in businesses, in households. Making these decisions smartly needs technical competence and the engagement of women. Technically competent engaged women power the balance we need.

The general good is our good, because it is a healthy reminder that the welfare of our whole society is a legitimate and necessary concern of all of us. Business depends upon a prosperous and healthy community.
